Semi translucent red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a light crimson red hue. Seductive violet, red cherry and strawberry aromas carry a perfumed like intensity out of the glass followed by fresh herb, forest floor and spicy cedar notes. The established vineyards on the Peninsula now have the significant advantage of meaningful vine age. But the reality is that many of those vineyards would likely be planted with different clones, different densities and sometimes different orientations based on today’s knowledge. Victoria Pun began her career as a speech pathologist, but she was diverted following a tasting in the Yarra Valley. After being offered a casual job opportunity as a cellar door assistant in 2019, her interest in wine deepened, beginning a first role in hospitality that was disrupted by the pandemic. Pun passed the Advanced Sommelier exam with the Court of Master Sommeliers in 2022 while working at Vue de Monde. She is the recipient of the Sommelier Australia Education Scholarship in 2022 and is currently pouring at The Recreation Bistro & Bottleshop. Simon Black is the winemaker at Red Hill’s Montalto, setting up the winery in 2009 and having run it ever since.
Many early plantings contained some of the Bordeaux red varieties, though principally cabernet sauvignon, along with riesling, a buzz variety in the ’70s and early ’80s. Pinot noir had been planted many years earlier, in the late 1930s, in a small plot at what is now Morning Star Estate. The Restaurant at Montalto - a seasonal, multi-course set menu by Head Chef Adam Johnston, crafted with estate-grown produce and paired to our wines.
In the glass, this Pinot Noir is a celebration of bright red fruits—wild strawberries, cherries, and a hint of cranberry—balanced by a touch of earthy spice and silky, structured tannins. A fresh line of acidity brings energy and precision, making it a delightfully vibrant and elegant drop. Pale ruby garnet in colour with a lifted nose of ripe red and black cherries, black rose petals, a touch of pomegranate and coriander seed and cardamom spice. On the palate the red cherry dominates with subtle spice and floral lavender and rosewater notes. A delicious, long mouthful of wine, with tangy pomegranate molasses on the finish. Ripe dark cherry, plum and anise aromas mix with hints of dried herbs, earth and spicy cedar.

Wines in the range are made using select Mornington Peninsula fruit by the good people at Yarra Valley stalwarts and former Secret Bottle featured winery Mandala. Maressa wines were created by Charles Smedley and David Fesq, with a goal to express the delicious, refreshing styles that Mornington Peninsula does so well. All the grapes are grown in the Mornington region, and are made under the attentive hand of the Mandala winery team.
A lively bouquet of red berry aromas, including fresh strawberry, cranberry and red cherry, complemented by soft notes of plum and a touch of orange zest. Intriguing hints of fresh spice from whole bunch fermentation add complexity, while earthy undertones and a trace of oak lend subtle depth. The palate delivers a vibrant expression of flavour, with juicy strawberry and dark cherry taking the spotlight. A rustic tannin structure provides balance and support, enhancing the wine's fruit-forward profile. Bright, refreshing acidity carries the flavours through to a long finish.
Subtle spicy notes of cinnamon, cardamom and star anise vie for attention. On the palate the wine is silky and fresh with bright red cherry fruit and clove and cinnamon spice. A hint of black pepper, fresh rosemary, thyme and lavender play across the tongue and the red cherry fruit lingers long. Silky tannin structure and bright red fruit acid balance the flavours and the wine is delicious and harmonious. The nose opens with red cherry, cranberry, rose petal and subtle hints of forest floor and spice. On the palate it is light to medium bodied, with soft tannins, bright acidity and layers of red fruit, earth, and savoury herbs.
The 2024 release is more about the earthiness and bramble reflective of the majority of the fruit coming from Little Creek and Basket Range, but it still sits comfortably in our usual house style - a dance of aromatics and tannin. Rich mouth filling dark plum, ripe cherry, strawberry and anise flavours are layered across the mid weighted palate. Concentrated and fleshy textured it has polished yet underlyingly sturdy tannins. Bright notes of fresh raspberry, cherries and black pepper on the nose with an underlying layer of mineral and cacao. On the palate, it’s persistent with generous red fruits, cedar, subtle game, and a dusting of aniseed. The 2024 Pinot Noir reveals enticing aromas of red and black fruits mingled with spice and earthy undertones.
A graceful Pinot Noir with persistence of flavour that will balance well with wood roasted quail and grilled radicchio. Now over 30 years old, this vineyard is just now reaching its stride in producing hauntingly unique wines that few vineyards can parallel. The 2019 Bishop Creek opens up with wet stone, crushed granite and generous brambly blackberry. Underlying the fruit and minerality are subtle roasted meat and game aroma, toasted nut and a general savory essence as the wine begins to crack open in the glass.
